Cricket World Is Too Long, Needs To Be Reformed: Ponting

Posted by DesiBaba on 13th April 2007

Australia captain Ricky Ponting said the seven-week Cricket World Cup is too long and challenged organizers to come up with a better format in 2011.

“It is a long event,” Ponting told reporters in Barbados. “In the future I think it can be condensed a little bit. We’ll learn lessons from this time around and hopefully make it a better World Cup next time.”

Ponting is the latest critic of a competition where grounds in the Caribbean have frequently been less than half full amid claims from former players such as ex-West Indies captain Viv Richards that the ticketing structure priced out local fans.

Tournament Chief Executive Chris Dehring said the length of the tournament was dictated by the decision to allow a reserve day for every match in case it was washed out, after weather disruptions at the 2003 tournament in South Africa. In the event, only the March 27 match between Australia and the Windies was pushed into a second day by adverse weather.

The 2011 World Cup will be held across India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Two of India’s favorite movie stars, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, have sent invitations – embossed with two entwined As and delivered with a box of chocolate meringues – for their private wedding set for this month, The Times of India reported this week in the latest in a spate of articles on the otherwise hush-hush nuptials. Earlier reports in the Indian media have claimed that the couple will wed April 20 in a small ceremony at Bachchan’s family home in suburban Mumbai. The wedding invitations were sent to a select few – including the industrialist Anil Ambani and his wife, Tina, the filmmaker Karan Johar and the actor Anupam Kher, The Times said. Bachchan, 31, and Rai, 33, have worked together in several movies, including “Guru,” released in January.

No More 20GB PS3 By Sony

Posted by DesiBaba on 13th April 2007

SONY has discontinued the 20-gigabyte PlayStation 3 game console so it can focus on a more popular – and expensive – model that has a bigger hard drive.

Since Playstation 3 was launched in November, consumers have flocked to the 60 gigabyte model, leaving the cheaper unit on the stands, Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Dave Karraker told Yahoo news.

Both models have the same hardware, but the 60 gigabyte console has built in wireless support and space for memory sticks.

Mr Karraker said the company would focus their resources on the console the people wanted, but the 20-gigabyte version would continue to have a retail price of $500 until supplies ran out.

There are still several thousand 20-gigabyte models on store shelves, Karraker said.

Production problems shortly after PlayStation 3 debuted meant that thousands of consumers had to wait in long lines and still couldn’t buy a console. While those purchasing the PS3 online were willing to pay several times the suggested retail price so they could have the consoles for the holidays.
